Stage and Aisle Lighting
Posted January 25, 2009 – 6:58 pm in: Entertainment
Theater, dance, opera and other art forms require good stage lighting. Stage lighting is just not illumination. It involves style, aesthetics and human emotions as well as psychology and the person in charge of lighting needs to know these things. That person should understand optics, perception and lighting technology.
The audience also needs good lighting so that they can get to their seats easily to enjoy the performance. Aisle lighting is just as important as stage lighting but for a different reason. The reason for aisle lighting is safety, which makes the IBC guardrail just as important.
Stage performing has become safer over the years than it once was. The earliest stage performances put on by Greek performers were always done in open-air theaters during the day with natural lighting. Then candles, torches, oil lamps and the like were eventually used indoors for stage performances. Finally, the incandescent lamp was invented in the late 1800s, which change stage performing completely. That led to portable lighting fixtures that could be used anywhere on or around a stage.
Then disaster struck with gas lighting. Many of theaters were turned into ashes because of gas lighting. Then Edison invented the light bulb. That really changed stage lighting forever. Stage performers could actually travel to places that did not have a formal stage in a theater. They could actually perform outside using stages with bridge supports and risers. This made the performing arts more mobile and available to the public than ever before.
