How To Save Money During A Remodel
Posted May 1, 2009 – 1:56 am in: Real EstateWe all know that in order to increase the value of our homes is to remodel and fix existing rooms, of course this can be incredibly costly and time consuming to say the least. With the job market as it is there is no such thing as job security anymore and so people do not want to take out home equity loans to make renovations anymore. Instead many people are trying to get by with smaller repairs that they can do themselves, this in my opinion is very smart as long as you know what you are doing or at least have the ability to follow directions and a good book.
There are many ways to save in renovations for example
- If renovating a bathroom you can paint the room a lighter color to brighten it or if it is white now then adding a splash of dramatic color may be better. By cleaning everything with bleach including the grout in the walls and floor, then changing some fixtures and faucets you will feel like you have a new bathroom. The total cost will be far less than a total remodel and will still look fresh and new.
- If remodeling a kitchen - instead of getting all new cabinets try taking down the old ones and sanding them, then you can repaint them or just add a new stain. When you hang them add new hardware and shelf paper. Instant new cabinets. You can also use discount granite or wholesale granite slabs to save money, this can be one of the most expensive things in your kitchen remodel if you are not careful so be sure to shop around. When shopping for new appliances purchase one at a time so that you do not have to use credit, it may take a little longer to finish updating, but you will have saved thousands in interest.
There are many ways to save during a remodel, but you must be willing to work for it in one way or another, this could be in research or sweat. It is worth it in the end when you take your time and do it right.
