Finding Sales Leads and Making The Best Of Every One Of Them

Posted April 30, 2009 – 7:14 pm in: Business

These daysfinding qualified sales leads that actually lead to sales can be very difficult and incredibly frustrating, but with the right techniques you can find the leads you need. Sales is like a strict game of chess, everyone must be in place and you must make the right moves or risk being taken apart and walking away empty handed (and incredibly frustrated), you must practice your pitch and you must be willing to change based on your audience.

  • In order to obtain qualified leads without paying for them you will have to work to build your own list. Depending on your business you might wish to start with social networking methods. In other words work Linked-In, FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, and any other method of social networking you can come across. Start by setting up a page for your business and then start chatting with others. Your signature should be used in every message and review that you do, this will quickly build you up and get you noticed. Of course, make sure that what you are posting is positive and reflects your company virtues or this could quickly backfire, you also want to stay away from anything with strong opinions since this can cause heat and friction that you do not need with a new company.
  • Another great method of marketing yourself for free is to do lots of reviews for products and services on sites like Amazon and Overstock (any site that is heavily visited and reviews are important). Every time that you post a review you should end it with a unique signature that contains all of your contact information and what you do. You may be surprised at the number of extra visitors you get from this cheap method of advertising.
  • Study company profiles by searching the web before approaching new companies. The more you know about a company the more you can impress the boss, think of it as a job interview - you know that this company is likely interviewing other companies and they will decide on the one with not only the best price, but the best personality. Believe it or not most business owners look at several aspects before assigning a service contract to a vendor, first off the one treating them on a personal level and offering good value will usually get the contract. I’ve been in situations where my price was higher than a competitors, but because I personally visited the office and was able to get along wonderfully with them my company still got the contract. A genuine smile can go a long way.
  • And lastly, learn to adapt your pitch to the specific business you are dealing with. Personalities are all different and everyone appreciates different ones so it makes sense that not everyone will respond to the same presentation, email, or letter. As you research the company try to find out about the individual you will be meeting with, if they are extremely professional then you know that you should wear a 3-piece suit and carry yourself in a certain way, you will speak in an educated manner and keep it to the facts. If you are speaking with someone laid back then you may be able to hold a lighter meeting with room for joking and personal interaction. In either case adapting yourself is the most important thing that you can do for yourself and your career.

Consider each presentation separately once you obtain the appointment and use every tool at your disposal to get to that appointment. Good luck out there.
