Avoiding Lay-off In Corporate America
Posted April 21, 2009 – 7:27 pm in: Business
In the corporate world there are many lay-offs taking place all over the country, people are in fear for their jobs each and every day and we must all be very aware that there are thousands of people out there who would be thrilled to have the job you don’t want or respect. If the business is doing poorly and will be closing or moving out of state then there is not very much that you can do to protect yourself from unemployment, however if there will be a percentage laid off while they try to make do with the remaining staff, then there are certain things that you should be careful to watch out for.
The first is time and attendance, are you there every day on time and ready to work? This does not mean in the kitchen getting coffee or chatting with the receptionist at your appointed time, this means at your desk or station ready to work at the appointed start time. With business payroll services being so advanced it is likely that your employer receives a report whenever you are out or late and that does not look good for you.
Next, keep the chatting in the office to a minimum. Employees with negative attitudes can really drag others down and if your employer overhears that you are unhappy or looking elsewhere, you can be sure that you will find yourself on the next layoff list. You are paid to work for a certain number of hours and that is what your employer expects to get for their money.
Watch the personal calls and internet usage, employers are no longer leaving this to chance and are installing spy ware on to all company computers. This means that they can read your email and see what sites you visit very easily. Don’t give them a reason to call you on this.
Finally, watch the trips to the bathroom, kitchen, etc. Every time you walk away from your workstation it takes you several minutes to get back to what you were doing. While you are probably trying to make the day go faster, people notice that you went here or there so many times or that you were gone for 10 min. It doesn’t seem like much, but that time adds up and your employer wants to see productivity.
The best way to protect yourself from the ax is to do your job the way that you are supposed to and keep to yourself while not being unfriendly. It’s not an easy thing to do, but your family will appreciate having a roof over their heads.
