According to Arkansas State police, Heath T. Bakken, 28, of Jonesboro, was driving southbound in the northbound lane of US 63 in Craighead County when it collided with a van carrying 8 developmentally handicapped adults. The driver of the van and three passengers were killed as well as the driver of the car.

Officers at the scene said the drivers of both vehicles were killed in the accident about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Two passengers in the van also died at the scene. State police said later that a third van passenger taken by helicopter to a hospital at Memphis, Tenn., about 50 miles southeast, died, bringing the death toll to five.

Authorities say the van involved was owned by Focus Inc., which provides services for developmentally disabled adults. State police identified those killed as:

  • Heath T. Bakken, 28, of Jonesboro, driver of the car going wrong way.
  • Angela F. Austin, 26, of Trumann, driver of the van.
  • Anthony Vaughn, 25, of Jonesboro, a van passenger.
  • Michael E. Lane, 34, of Jonesboro, a van passenger.
  • Gerald Brown, 56, of Jonesboro, a van passenger.

The five people injured, ranging in age from 29 to 41, were all Jonesboro residents who were riding in the van. The accident occurred on the interstate-grade U.S. 63 between Bay and Jonesboro, about 5 miles southeast of Jonesboro.

For those who may have been in a severe car accident and been injured . . . If your face was injured in a severe car accident and you have eyelid problems from it, you may need Dothan Alabama eyelid surgery to correct the problem. Who knows, a Panama City Florida plastic surgeon may be able to reverse all the damage done to your face in that accident.

Focus Inc., a Jonesboro-based nonprofit organization, owned the van that was transporting the disabled adults from a data center when the accident occurred. Rebecca Singleton, focus co-director, told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the crash five miles south of Jonesboro was the center’s “worst nightmare.” Focus Inc., serves disabled adults in the Northeast Arkansas area on a regular basis. It is always a tragedy when someone loses their life, no matter what the circumstances are. The amazing part is that three people were completely un-injured in this tragedy. Three others were only slightly injured. Out of the 11 people involved in this accident, six people will walk away.

My Take: At the time, nobody knew why the driver was driving on the wrong side of the road 2:15 in the afternoon. It has been determined that the driver of the PT Cruiser was a diabetic. Apparently, his blood sugar got so low and he went into a coma while driving his car. The man should have been a little bit more careful if he was a diabetic.

Maybe he should have taken in defensive driving course, which would have taught him to pay attention to his diabetes. Maybe the driver of the van should have gone to an academy driving school NY. I know the DMV in New York like any DMV has rules on which side of the road a driver should drive on. This just makes me believe more that everyone should take a defensive driving course at some point during his or her adult life.

One thing is definitely for sure, the families of five people are going to be looking for funeral urns. There was no mention of pets being with anyone involved in the accident. At least, they will not need pet urns as well.

Other Resources

An All-Around Lawyer

It is well known that Texas has all-around Cowboys. However, many do not realize that they also have all-around lawyers, lawyers that provide comprehensive client service to businesses and individuals with legal issues. Some people call them TX administrative attorneys because they do so much. They handle such a wide variety of issues such as contracts, business formation, immigration and even bankruptcy and personal injury. These lawyers can give you highly sophisticated legal advice that reflects their knowledge of state and federal law that applies to individuals as well as the business market environment. They will provide legal solutions to your legal issues.

Traffic Violations

Speeding down the road will usually result in getting a traffic ticket. Simply paying a traffic ticket does not end the matter since the DMV puts points on your license for most traffic infractions. A few summonses on your record can total up enough points to lose your license. That is why it is important to defend yourself against a traffic summons even if it is only your first violation with a Monmouth County traffic ticket lawyer. It will be even worse if that traffic ticket also has a DWI and then you need Monmouth County DWI attorney.

Removal Service

Do you have a car that is nothing but junk? Is it taking up useful space in your backyard? Has it become the home of unsavory critters that could be a danger to your children? There is a removal service that believes you should be paid to have your unwanted junk vehicle courteously and professionally removed quickly. They buy junk cars like that one in your backyard. There will be no middleman is making the arrangements and taking a commission or fee. You deal directly with the company that will buy your car and they are all experienced local professionals in this business.

Potential DUI Penalties

When you have been arrested for a DUI there are many penalties that you could face if you do not have a San Mateo County CA DUI attorney. You could face jail time of 48 hours to one year and fines and $390-$1000 plus assessments. That is not to mention the license suspension or revoked license or six months to three years. A good lawyer could help you avoid some of these penalties through alternative sentencing such as community service or alcohol/drug treatments. The point is, without an attorney to help defend you; you are facing more problems than you already have.

Go to Jail, Do Not Pass, Go Do Not Collect $200

In Pennsylvania, if you are convicted of a DUI there is a mandatory jail time that is determined by the legislature. Your Bucks County DUI attorney will explain that a mandatory sentence means that a judge has no choice and must sentence you to jail time, which can range from 2 days to one year in jail, depending on your prior record. The majority of the hundreds of multiple offenders that Bucks County criminal attorneys have represented have received house arrest instead of several months in jail. If it is your first offense, you may be eligible for the ARD program in which there is no jail time and the charges will eventually be dismissed by the DA once you have completed the program.
